GP is proud to announce the completion of Expo Place, transforming Shanghai's former 2010 World Expo site from a fragmented, partially abandoned landscape into a thriving mixed-use district built for everyday urban life.
”World Expo sites are built for a moment in time, not for the long arc of city life,” said James Zheng, AIA, LEED AP, CEO and president of GP. ”Expo Place demonstrates how thoughtful design, adaptive reuse, and programmatic diversity can turn a temporary global stage into a permanent, thriving neighborhood.”
Working alongside retail architect Link Design Group, we developed a strategy rooted in adaptive reuse—retaining existing below-grade infrastructure as the foundation for a diverse program of office, retail, and hospitality, including Asia’s first Thompson-branded property. Above ground, the project rejects the monolithic mega-development in favor of a layered urban fabric drawn from the scale and texture of traditional Shanghai alleyways.
